1. What are the signs of TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is a chronic condition affecting the joints that open and close your jaw. Factors like jaw injury, arthritis, teeth grinding, and connective tissue disorders can all contribute to the development of TMJ, but in many cases, the causes are uncertain.

TMJ symptoms can occur in one or both joints.  Some of the telltale signs of TMJ are:

  • Jaw pain
  • Jaw tenderness
  • Difficulty fully opening your mouth to bite or chew
  • Severe pain when you yawn
  • Earaches
  • Face pain
  • Jaw locking and inability to open or close your mouth normally

TMJ can be so severe that some people must stick to a liquid diet.  Severe TMJ can cause symptoms nearly around the clock, with many people experiencing miserable restless sleep due to jaw pain.

2. What are the traditional treatments for TMJ?

There are a plethora of treatments for TMJ today, including Botox® injections, surgical jaw bone adjustments, and dental procedures.  Unfortunately, for many people with TMJ, those treatments only have short-lived effects or don’t work at all.

Instead of invasive treatments, Dr. Lee uses strictly natural approaches at Pearl River Acupuncture.  Where other treatments have repeatedly failed for many of her patients, Dr. Lee has established an excellent record of long-term success with acupuncture.

3. How does acupuncture relieve TMJ pain?

Traditional Chinese medicine beliefs say that acupuncture improves your body’s flow of Qi (natural energy).

Qi courses through many tunnels called meridians. The meridians link the many different acupuncture points on your body, with each point corresponding to organs and other parts of your body.

Qi can get stuck at many different points in the body, which prevents the smooth flow of energy your body needs for good health. This can then lead to pain, disease, and disability. Acupuncture uses very slim needles to open your meridians and helps Qi flow smoothly to help relieve your TMJ symptoms.

Many scientific studies indicate that acupuncture also has a variety of specific beneficial effects on the body.  Acupuncture for TMJ may:

  • Relax tight and clenched jaw muscles
  • Stimulate the release of natural pain-relieving neurotransmitters
  • Improve circulation to help repair damaged tissues
  • Reduce nerve pain signals
  • Stimulate cortisol production to decrease inflammation and relieve stress

Dr. Lee uses an ultra-gentle needling technique that relieves pain very effectively.  Many patients who once feared needles now trust Dr. Lee for their TMJ pain relief.
